Princess Yachts was founded in Plymouth in 1965 as Marine Projects (Plymouth) Ltd and was bought out by South African businessman Graham J. Beck in 1981. In 2001, they renamed Marine Projects into Princess Yachts International PLC. Beck sold a 75% ownership in the company in June 2008 for 200 million euros/pounds to French industrialist Bernard Arnault’s investment group, L Capital 2 FCPR, a part of LVMH. Over 60 international luxury brands are part of the LVMH group, including Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Fendi, De Beers, Mot & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, and Krug.
Princess Yachts announced in January 2018 that they would be collaborating with BAR Technologies on the development of a new yacht, the Princess R Class, which was launched later that year. BAR Technologies, founded by gold medalist Olympian Ben Ainslie, is a team of naval architects and engineers formed to capitalize on the skills and experience gained by the British yacht racing team Land Rover BAR.
The new yacht is made entirely of carbon fiber and incorporates Princess’ Active Foil System, making it Princess’ fastest yacht to date. Princess also collaborated with Pininfarina, an Italian design house, to create the R Class’s carbon-fiber monocoque hull, which improved the boat’s aerodynamics.
The R Class was covered in dazzle camouflage during its development stage to confuse the eye and help conceal its design from competitors. After winning a design competition, Katie Sheppard, a Plymouth College of Art student, designed the camouflage.
Princess Yachts operates over 3,000 people in 119 countries and has shipyards encompassing over 1.1 million square feet in total.
